Celebrating World Environment Day with Sensory Activities

At Longbridge Deverill Nursing Home, we are delighted to share the enriching experiences our residents have immersed themselves in this month, especially through our engaging sensory activities that celebrate the beauty of nature. In honour of World Environment Day, we organised several days of multi-sensory activities that captivated our residents and brought the natural world into our care home.

A Multi-Sensory Celebration of Nature

Our World Environment Day celebrations were nothing short of spectacular. Residents had the opportunity to:

  • Taste the Sea: Sampling seaweed provided a unique and intriguing taste experience.
  • Soothing Scents: Essential oils fill the air, offering calming and therapeutic aromas.
  • Texture Exploration: Residents explored diverse textures, from smooth pebbles to rough bark.
  • Calming Sounds: The gentle sounds of water created a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.
  • Habitat Sorting: Engaging in activities that involved sorting creatures into their rightful habitats fostered cognitive engagement and learning.

Throughout the month, our sensory exploration did not stop. Residents continued to engage with nature through:

  • Natural Materials: The soothing touch of acorns, pine cones, and other natural materials provided tactile stimulation.
  • Lavender and Aloe Vera: Hand massages using lavender and Aloe Vera not only relaxed the residents but also filled the air with delightful scents.
  • Handmade Paper Creation: One of the month’s highlights was creating handmade paper using unique materials such as thistledown, old man’s beard, and bracken. Each piece of paper provided a tangible connection to the natural world and a sense of accomplishment.

These activities are more than just fun; they are carefully designed to enhance well-being by stimulating cognitive function and nurturing emotional health. This is particularly beneficial for those with dementia, as sensory activities can evoke positive memories and emotions, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of calm.

At Longbridge Deverill Nursing Home, we prioritise person-centred care, ensuring each resident feels connected, valued, and supported. Our sensory activities are just one of the many ways we strive to create a nurturing and engaging environment for our residents.
