In a heartwarming initiative aimed at enhancing the living experience of residents with Alzheimer's, Longbridge Deverill Nursing Home proudly introduces a series of dementia-friendly, interactive wall murals. Spearheaded by Karyn, the Activities Team Lead, and featuring hand-painted artwork, these murals are designed to provide sensory stimulation and foster engagement among residents, creating a vibrant and therapeutic environment.

The dedicated care home team has invested time and creativity in decorating the dementia units with these unique murals. Karyn, along with the activities team, has hand-painted intricate scenes that not only serve as visually appealing elements but also offer tactile therapeutic effects through three-dimensional items that residents can touch, pick up, hold, and share.

Residents are already enjoying the interactive experience, such as picking fruit from the hand-painted trees and placing them in nearby baskets. A delightful addition to the dementia units is the bus shelter, complete with a bus pass for each resident, evoking memories of travel and holidays. The opposite mural featuring a canal bridge scene adds a touch of nostalgia and sparks conversations about past adventures.

The murals extend beyond mere visuals; they encapsulate the essence of various experiences. A scene with laundry on the line brings the sensation of summer's fresh air and warm breezes, providing a delightful escape for residents and visitors alike from the chilly weather outside.

A particularly exciting addition is the post office mural complete with a real postbox, set to be incorporated into a weekly fun postal service involving neighbouring schools and families. This interactive element not only engages residents but also fosters connections with the broader community.

"These murals and large images create a profound sense of inclusion, communication, and community for our residents," expresses Karyn, underscoring the importance of such initiatives in enriching the lives of those living with dementia.

The commitment of the care home team to providing not just care but a vibrant and engaging living environment is evident in these thoughtful and creative additions. The new murals stand as a testament to Longbridge Deverill Nursing Home's dedication to enhancing the well-being and overall experience of its residents.
