Remembrance Day & Reminiscence Therapy
So far this November, at Longbridge Deverill Nursing Home, we have recognised Remembrance Day through a variety of activities and have placed a particular focus on supporting our residents with reminiscence therapy.
As part of our arts and crafts sessions, residents created lovely poppies to wear, decorate their own bedrooms, and combine to create a wreath for our lounge. Residents not only enjoyed the creativity but also the interaction as a group activity which sparked lots of great conversation that has undoubtedly strengthened the bonds of our residents.
Our residents felt honoured to be part of another momentous occasion in support and recognition of those who served in the armed forces. Some residents joined up in the lounges to mark the occasion while others chose to watch the ceremony from the comfort of their own rooms.
Many residents shared heartwarming memories of themselves being in a parade or family members who have been honoured in some way for their service to the country.
Carrying on the theme of reminiscence, we incorporated some more therapy into our other planned activities. One fantastic activity in particular was the creation of collages to put in their memory boxes that hang on the wall outside their rooms.
The collages were designed and created with the resident's life stories in mind. They included wholesome memories of special times in their life and ones shared with loved ones. Some residents even shared amazing stories of the things they are most proud of and have achieved in times gone by.
These reminiscent activities have helped enhance our resident's sense of wellbeing and contribute to their self-perception. We strongly value the impact that reminiscence has on our residents, supporting them with keeping their family history alive and strengthening their social and emotional wellbeing.
